The waters along the shores of Maui are quite inviting and it is easy to see the sand or coral reef beneath. It is no surprise it is what draws the locals and the travelers to getting into the waters to explore the beautiful world below. The life and environment below the surface filled with vibrant colors and a variety of marine life that includes Green Sea Turtles, yellow tang fish, the state fish, Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, yellow tang, crabs, octopus, and so much more. If you are looking for a spot to see these underwater creatures, including the green sea turtles, check out these spots on Maui.
Napili Bay
One of the perfect locations for the family or a group of friends to enjoy while watching out for sea turtles, this is the spot. It is a sandy cove that is near the resort area, so there are restrooms and the opportunity to purchase food nearby. The beach in this location is sandy but watch your footing, you will eventually come across the coral reef under your feet. Sea turtles are frequent visitors in the waters around this area and when the conditions are mellow it is a great spot to snorkel.
Black Rock
Black Rock is located on the north end of Ka’anapali Beach. It is the stretch of sandy beach on the northern end recognized as Maui’s most well-known beach. The waters off the shore attract a wide variety of colorful tropical fishes, green turtles, and coral life. This is a great spot to enjoy the day but be sure to keep an eye on the tide, as the swells start to increase usually toward the afternoon hours.
Coral Gardens Snorkeling Spot
Another great snorkeling and sea turtles watching spot in Maui is the Coral Gardens. It is nestled along the Pali Coast, just south of Olowalu on the western side of Maui. The current is not as the Pali cliff side protects the snorkeling spot from winds and waves. The snorkeling spot is accessible by boat. Beneath the surface you will see beautiful coral formations, a varied showcase of Hawaiian tropical fish that include angelfish, butterflyfish, and parrotfish. Frequent appearances of green sea turtles, octopus, crabs, and eels as well. The water here is clear, allowing you to see forty feet down.
Kapalua Bay
Beautiful white sandy beaches and exceptional snorkeling makes Kapalua Bay an ideal spot to spend the day. It is popular both with residents and visitors so getting there is not difficult. The two reefs that extend on both ends of the beach form a C-shaped cove protecting it against high winds and current; thus, the calm water is perfect for family bonding and beginner snorkeling. The corals along the rocky point on the right side are the healthiest so make sure to check them out first.
Be sure to check the weather conditions a few days before going out and especially on the day before heading out on your adventures. The ocean is a beautiful place to enjoy the day you should always be prepared. During the winter the north swells can get big. We recommend selected snorkeling spots on the south side of Maui when the north swells are peaking.
Another quick tip: Be sure to invite a snorkeling friend and tell someone where you plan to be out on the ocean and when you plan to return. Respect/keep at least 10 – 20 ft distance from any sea life while snorkeling, your adventure will be much more pleasant and safe.
