The Dragon’s Teeth
A short hiking trail that has a unique lava formation. This formation was the result of hot lava that once flowed on Maui to the ocean along the Makaluapuna Point. The chemical composition of hot lava is shaped by the ocean’s waves, beating it back, forming vertical, fin-like formations. In addition to admiring the formation, you can also enjoy the beautiful ocean views while out on this hike.
This is a short hike that is roughly 0.5 miles. To get to this location, you turn off from Hwy 30 toward the ocean, take a right on Office Road into Lower Honoapi’ilani Road. There is a small parking lot in the area.

Honolua Bay Access Trail
If you are looking for an easy short hiking trip for the family, this is one you should look into in West Maui. The hike is 0.6 miles out and back. The hike is surrounded by large trees, a rainforest that ends at Honolua Bay. The trail is flat and wide, making it easy to walk. This is a great choice for a family hiking adventure.

Kapalua Coastal Trail
The Kapalua Coastal Trail is a 2.5-mile trail out and back that is located near Lahaina. The trail is a family-friendly trail that has great ocean views along the way. It is a popular trail for people to walk or run. It takes a little less than an hour to complete.

ʻŌhai Trail Loop
Located on the north side of West Maui. As with many of the trails along the ocean, the views are spectacular. In addition to the views of the ocean, you will find lush greenery and a variety of plant species along the trail. One of the species you find is called the ʻOhai plant, which is how the trail got its name. The Overlook part of the trail is paved for ADA access and a great spot to watch Whales when they are in the Hawaiian waters. This is also a great short hike for the whole family, as it is not too challenging. There are some rolling hills to stroll along, but it is not an extraordinarily long hike as it is roughly 1.2 miles. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing, close-toed shoes, bring water, and use sunscreen.

Waihe’e Ridge Trail
Waihe’e Ridge Trail is a 5-mile hike into the clouds located near Wailuku in Central Maui. The trail is a 1700’ elevation and offers a spectacular view once you get to the top. As you make your way through, you will immediately realize the journey itself is already splendid. Your eyes will bathe in the beautiful rainforest, the majestic Makamaka’ole Falls hidden in the luscious green trees. Apparently these two-tiered falls are what you may call a hidden gem, as it is hard to view from anywhere else. The scenic views of the ocean, as well as the elegant side of Haleakala, and the epic ridge-line views. The difficulty level is moderate, with some parts that are a bit steep. The terrain is mostly muddy and slippery, though, so it is advisable to choose footwear with good traction when planning to take the trail. You might also like to start hiking early, 7 am is the earliest, as the place can be covered with clouds by mid-morning. The trail ends at 2500 feet above sea level, at a small hill named Lanilili. Reaching this part of the hike will reward you with the epic views in every direction.

ʻĪao Valley State Park
ʻĪao Valley State Park is a nature’s gem that is accessible to anyone. It is a lush, tropical rainforest located 5 km west of Wailuku in West Maui. The main attraction of the place is the emerald-green and surreally shaped ʻĪao Needle, which is a 0.4-mile moderately trafficked loop trail created by erosion of softer rock around it. The hike is easily accessible to most as there is a paved trail and offers exquisite views of deep valleys, ridgelines, and the island’s coastlines. Maui is indeed a haven of many spectacular views, may it be underwater or in the woods. And only those with a heart of stone won’t fall in love with this beautiful island.
